Artic Char in Greenland

Camp Nap

Atlantik Travel's Camp Nap has been established on the banks of one of Greenland's best Artic Char waters, the River Nappiarissat. Here you can experience superb angling in absolutely spectacular surroundings!

The River Nappiarissat

Camp Nap has been set up so that the river's best pool is on your doorstep. The size and sheer number of fish here really must be seen to be believed.

Descriptions of the best beats are given below, BUT please remember that fish can be found everywhere along the 14km of fishable water:

The Sea Pool

Large numbers of artic char enter this pool with the rising tide. These incredibly hard fighting fish are , bright silver when they enter the river fresh from saltwater, range from 1 to 5 kg in weight.

The Sea Pool Upstream

This beat is characterised by the many large stones that are regularly distributed in the river, creating hundreds of good lies for the char. There are also a number of exciting runs.

The Bend

300m before the waterfall the river makes a sharp turn, creating a chain of pools. At times many, many fish can be found in the pools themselves and the fast water at their heads and tails.

The biggest individuals tend to lie in the deepest holes, so a sink tip line can be the key to taking a good fish here.

The Waterfall

This is the rivers most productive pool and lies only 100m from camp.

The numbers of fish here are incredible! The pool is perfect for fishing slies on the surface,  anything from traditional dries to foam wake flies. There are just so many fish here, you just have to decide how you want to catch them.....

Gudenåen

Named after Denmark's longest river, this beat is a 5 minute walk from camp. Here the river divides into two and the nearest section is totally free of large stones. Fishing wet flies downstream in the classical way can be a very productive way of catching the multitude of char found here.

Seeing a large bow wave following your fly as it swings trough the current before it is violently taken by a fish really is an experience to remember...

The Rapids

Upstream of the "Gudenåen" beat and running all the way to the flat plain that stretches out in front of the lakes, this beat consists of one large pool after another. This beat can be characterised as one long set of rapids, where fish can be found in the rapids, at the foot of the rapids and above the rapids....

The Flats

This beat looks rather boring at first sight, but make no mistake, the water is alive with char. The beat starts where the landscape flattens out into a flat plain and stretches all the way to the lakes. Here sight fishing is the way to go, it is easy to see and cast to individual fish in the quiet waters of this beat - excellent entertainment!

Gin (clear)

High up in the river system, above the lakes you can find this crystal clear stream that is tightly packed with fish. This tributary to the main stream is one of the places the char make their redds, so it is perhaps best to only make a few casts here before sitting back and just enjoying watching this marvellous sight. You can find "Gin" if you feel like a long walk along the river, but remember you also have to walk back to camp!

The Camp

From Sisimiut it is a 1½ to 2 hour boat passage to the mouth of the river. You then make the rest of your way to camp on foot, and it is around a 40 min. walk along natural paths. Each guest sleeps in their individual two man tent, and the camp also includes a mess tent equipped with table, chairs, cooking equipment and heater.

The Fishing

The river has an enormous run of artic char, from 1 to 5kg, which can be found along the whole length of the river. Their average weight is between 1½ to 2kg, but there are many fish between 2 and 4kg, with some fish reaching 5kg.

Arctic char are an incredibly hard fighting fish, pound for pound much stronger than seatrout for example. With the numbers of fish found in this river it would be difficult to find better char fishing anywhere else in the world.

The Nappiarissat is an ideal fly fishing water, and we encourage you to practice this form of fishing. You are also most welcome to bring a spinning rod, but we do reserve the right to class some of the beats as "Fly Only".
