Northern Ireland - Atlantic Salmon

River Mourne

We are pleased to be able to offer a classic salmon river that not only offers good numbers of fish and beautiful countryside, but also absolutely first class service and excellent accommodation.

Angling - Fly Only

The River Mourne is a "classic" salmon river in the very best sense of the word. The character of the river changes often as it flows through the idyllic Irish landscape - giving rise to many good pools and lies. In partnership with the Baronscourt Fishery (see www.barons-court.com) we can now offer clients to fish a number of privately owned beats.

The river can be said to be of a nearly perfect size and in most places, under normal conditions, anglers will be able to cast over to the opposite bank, allowing them to cover the water thoughly with their fly. The services of the estate's ghilies are always included with the fishing. They have an intimate knowledge of the river and will be a hand to help improve your chances of landing a salmon, by pointing out the most best lies, giving advice on how to select the most suitable fly and offering other advice.

The River Mourne has its main run of salmon in the late summer/early autumn; September is regarded as the best month and produces most fish. At the start of the season, the first fish enter the river in April and May; so this is the time to visit if you want to try for one of these sought after early fish, the so-called springers. The average size of salmon produced by the Mourne is around 3 -4 kg, with some larger fish being occasionaly caught.

Two fish counters have been installed at either end of the Baronscourt Fishery, and help keep a record of how many fish pass through the river. They also help to give an idea of how many fish are present in the Estate's waters at any given time.

In addition to the salmon, the river Mourne also has a good population of brown trout, together with some rainbows. It is therefore also a good idea to bring along a light trout fly  rod and a box of flies - by all means dries - if you think you mighty like a break from salmon fishing.

Accommodation

Anglers visiting Baronscourt will have the pleasure of staying on the estate itself, either in the "Governor's Lodge" or the "Clock Tower" (click here for more information). Here you can soak up the unique atmosphere of a centuries old Irish stately home.

Extra Activities

Angling on the River Mourne can be combined with activities such as wing shooting (walking up) riding, golf or just walking in the surrounding countryside. In fact Barons Court is ideally suited for anglers who wish to travel with a non-fishing companion, with planty of things to do and see in the surounding area. There is even a cookery school if you would like to learn new ways of preparing your catch!

Baronscourt also has the "Belle Isle Estate", a 190 hectare estates spread over 8 islands on Upper Lough Erne, which can offer excellent pike fishing. If you would like to enjoy a days fishing here, or extend you stay with a couple of nights on this beautiful estate, we would be happy to arrange this for you. Additionally we can also offer wing shooting (driven hunts) for snipe and woodcock from October (late November for Woodcock) to January. Please contact us for more details.

The Ghillies

Every beat has a ghillie assigned to it, who is there to show you the best lies, help choose the correct fly, or simply put the kettle on for a cup of tea or coffee. Their experience helps you to get the most out of your time on the river from the beginning. It becomes easier for you to relax while fishing, which in turn helps to give better results....

Angling "Safety Net"

It is a well-known fact that catching salmon involves a great deal of luck, and that much depends on the wind and weather. However, if the weather gods are totally against fishing in the Mourne during your stay, and the river is running much too high or altogether too low, all is not lost! Baronscourt works in co-operation with a number of other fisheries, enabling guests to fish alternative waters  if angling at Baronscourt is impossible. This is naturally only available in exceptional circumstances, which only occur very rarely.
