Canada: White Sturgeon

Fraser River
An outstanding fishery and luxury accommodation in the Canadian wilderness. This is a tour for those who want something really special. During the same week last year, a sturgeon weighing 350kg and measuring 324cm was caught by one of Atlantik's clients on our group tour.
A stay at Fraser River Lodge is an extraordinary experience; while the fishing on the Fraser River is first class.
This might be the best time of the year to fish for white sturgeon, which are present in the hundreds. The salmon fishing is also outstanding at this time of year.
At the Fraser River Lodge not only the fishery is great. The accommodation and the service are also outstanding. How would you, for instance, like to be served a gourmet meal every evening by the lodge’s cook? Afterwards you can enjoy "après fishing" in the Jacuzzi, the view of rivers or the mountains, or play some snooker and pool with your fishing companions.
Every morning pancakes, omelettes, indeed whatever you desire is served.
We of course enjoy lunch while out fishing grounds or in the boat. When you want to rest your body, after a day of fighting exceptionally large sturgeon and salmon, you sleep on an ergonomic mattress, so that you awake fresh, rested and ready for a new day in the wilds.
We have thought of every little detail. You can have your salmon served as dinner or you can have it smoked or frozen, ready for you to take home.
When you arrive at Fraser, all you need to worry about is fishing, relaxing and enjoying the amazing stay!

Fish present in the Fraser River:
King salmon
The world’s largest salmon: the king salmon can weigh up to 30 kg and is quite simply a formidable adversary.
A stay at the lodge guarantees encounters with these giants. Even though you may not catch a 30 kg fish, 10 kg fish are not unusual, while the chances for a 20 kg fish are good.
The king salmon is caught on the same tackle used when fishing for salmon in European rivers, as well as on heavy spin tackle.
High season: June to October
Steelhead
Every year around 6.000 – 10.000 steelhead swim up the rivers running into the Fraser delta.
The chance of encountering one of these fierce fighters is therefore very good. Steelhead ascend from January to August, but it is most pleasurable to fish during the summer months. If you fish in August, there are a lot of other species you can catch while fishing for steelhead.
The fish are caught the same way as trout are caught around the world. Only here we can talk about fish weighing up to ten kilos. Of course this is not an everyday occurrence, but absolutely possible during your stay at the lodge.
Season: January to first half of September
Silver salmon
The silver salmon is one of the Pacific Ocean’s most beautiful inhabitants. The salmon is silver and well proportioned when it enters the river.
This salmon does not grow as big as the king salmon or steelhead, but it is a great addition to the larger species.
Silver salmon can be caught on fly or by spinning.
Season: September to December
Sturgeon
The biggest sturgeon ever caught on Fraser River was estimated to weigh 1500 lbs, this fish was caught a few years ago, just downstream of the lodge.
Most fish are relatively small, but sturgeon weighing 100 kg or more are not unusual.
The largest catch by one person is 47 sturgeon in five days. Therefore it is nearly certain that you will come in contact with this fish if you spend some time angling for them.
You practice bait fishing for sturgeon and suitable tackle is available at the lodge.
It should be no need to mention that catch and release is practised here.
Season: all year
Other species
Besides the king and the silver salmon Fraser River offers fishing for chum, sockeye, and pink salmon (bluebacks).
The chum is seen as one of the most aggressive, if not the most aggressive, salmon. The fish takes violently and will fiercely attacks everything that gets too near.
Fraser River has the largest ascent of sockeye salmon. This salmon species is also the tastiest. A catch of around a hundred fish per day is not unusual.
Pink, or blueback, salmon only breed every second year. However an estimated 14.000.000 fish, ascend at the river.
It sounds unbelievable but a fact none the less. The next breeding year for pink salmon is 2009.
Further more you can catch trout and char in the tributaries of the Fraser River and in the lakes around the river. A lot of these streams and lakes are rarely fished. So you can cast at fish that might never have seen an angler before.
Canada is waiting!
